Floating Floors Over Carpet? Yes Yes Yes!

floating floors

At SelecTech, we’re often asked if our floating floors can be installed over carpet. While there are several considerations, the short answer is yes! Ideal for many situations, installing interlocking flooring from FreeStyle proves to be an effective, time-saving, money-saving way to update your space.
Here is a closer look.

Why over carpet?

First, let us start by looking at the why. Why would someone want to install interlocking flooring over carpet? One of the most common reasons is that the space is leased. For instance, consider an electronics lab. This environment often requires high levels of static control to ensure sensitive equipment is protected. Now consider that lab moving into a carpeted, leased space – not ideal. Being leased, the property must be vacated in the condition in which it is entered. Thus, removing a carpet is not an option. However, installing a floating floor is an option.

Not only will you have the static control required but also a clean, new look and feel to your workspace. If that wasn’t enough, the flooring from SelecTech is also easily lifted to travel from one space to the next should you relocate down the road.

Of course, there are considerations.

As mentioned, there are several considerations at hand before laying down a floating floor. The first consideration is the condition of the carpet. The last thing anyone wants to do is cover a nasty carpet. Take the time to vacuum, shampoo, and disinfect the carpeted surface. This way, you have peace of mind that you are not trapping anything nasty under the new floor.

Secondly, you need to determine the type of carpet. Thicker, shaggier carpets with thick pads are more difficult to create an airlocked seam. Impossible, no – but certainly a bit more involved and tricky. Instead, thinner carpets are the ideal choice in this situation. Often, office spaces have carpet glued directly to the concrete. With no padding, this type of carpet is cold and provides no underfoot comfort – perfect for floating floors.

Let’s talk installation.

While some leased spaces are residential, many are also commercial. For the sake of this article, we’ll stick with the commercial side of things. That said, downtime is generally disruptive and costs the company money. Lucky for you, SelecTech is here to minimize, if not eliminate downtime with quick and easy installation. Don’t believe us?
